Nalbinding, part 1 – ¿Qué es eso? – What’s that?

Algunas personas ya saben qué es el nalbinding o tejer con sólo una aguja. Pero la verdad es que no he encontrado nada sobre este tema en castellano, por eso voy a decir ‘nalbinding’ para esta técnica, una palabra que proviene de Escandinavia y que se ha impuesto también en el inglés. Que lo sepa yo, nalbinding fue una técnica muy popular en la Edad Media e incluso antes de nuestra historia. Por lo menos en muchas partes de Europa. No tengo ningún dato sobre España. Pero a mí me fascina: se puede hacer un tejido cosiendo con un hilo de 2-3 metros añadiendo otro hilo cuando se acabe el primero y solo con una aguja. Hay un montón de ‘puntos’ diferentes y en youtube se puede ver y aprenderlos Oslo stitch por ejemplo.

Las agujas que he usado para las muestras me había regalado una compañera en el oficio de las lanas en Ravelry, Ariette. Ella las hizo a mano y me encantan. Una de las agujas es de hueso. Me he hecho un par de mitones sin la parte de arriba con el punto ‘Korgen‘. También he probado los puntos ‘Oslo’, ‘Coptic‘ y ‘York‘.

 

Some people already know what nalbinding is. But actually, I haven’t found any information about nalbinding in Spanish, that is why I am going to refer to this technique which uses only threads and one needle, as nalbinding. This name is the most frequently used for this technique, even in English, and it comes from Scandinavia. As far as I know, nalbinding was a common and quite popular craft used for making textiles in the Middle Ages and before. At least in most parts of Europe. But I don’t have any information about it in Spain. But I am fascinated about this craft: you can make a textile, like a mitten, hat or sock, just with a simple thread and a needle. You just have to add a new thread when the old one has ended. There are a lot of different kind of ‘stitches’ and luckily, Neulakintaat has described almost every stitch on her website and also put a video on youtube.

The nalbinding needles that I am using were made by Ariette, a Ravelry-friend from Holland. She made them herself one out of wood and the other of bone. I just love them, they work wonderfully. I have made myself a pair of mittens without the top using the ‘Korgen’ stitch. I have also tried out the ‘York’ stitch, ‘Oslo’ stitch and the ‘Coptic’ stitch.
